Sudanese sesame is globally recognized for its exceptional quality, rich history, and vital role in international trade. Known for their distinctive flavor, superior nutritional profile, and versatility in a wide range of cuisines, Sudanese sesame seeds remain among the most sought-after varieties worldwide. Despite many national challenges, Sudan has continued to maintain and grow its sesame export industry.
Origin & Agricultural Excellence
Sesame plants thrive in Sudan’s well-drained, neutral pH soils, making the country an ideal environment for premium sesame cultivation. These plants require significantly less water—50% less than cotton and 66% less than sorghum—which highlights their remarkable drought tolerance.
The state of Gedarif is especially renowned for producing Sudan’s finest sesame seeds. It contributes a major share of the national production, yielding over 62,000 tonnes during the 2020–2023 market year. Gedarif’s strategic proximity to Port Sudan enhances export efficiency and has earned it the title of Sudan’s agricultural “breadbasket.”
More than 2.5 million rain-fed hectares across eastern and central Sudan are dedicated to sesame cultivation, reflecting the crop’s importance in both the national economy and global supply chains.
